The elite women's individual time trial for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships took place Saturday in Wollongong, Australia.
Olympic champion and two-time time trial world champion Annemiek van Grooten told a press conference in the mixed zone that she could not be in contention for a third world title in this discipline from the start.
"I felt it was impossible today. When I came out of the gate on the hard, I felt like I was already way behind at the first halfway point," Van Vleuten told the press at the finish line.
"It was a bad day. Afterwards, when I looked at the power of my effort, I realized that today was not a good day."
Van Vleuten said.
Despite finishing only seventh in the time trial, compatriot Ellen van Dijk won the world title for the second year in a row and the third time in her career.
Van Breuten finished the 34.2 km time trial 1:43 behind winner van Dijk's 44:28.
At the intermediate checkpoints, Van Vleuten was 10th after the first 7.2 km, having already lost 10 seconds; at the 24.5 km mark, he was 8th, 34 seconds behind the winner.
"No, I had the feeling that it wasn't a good day, and not a great day at the halfway point either. Not much to say. I couldn't do it today. It was not a good day," Van Bruten said.
It is unusual for the Dutchman, who has consistently achieved her major goals this year with overall victories at the Giro d'Italia Donnay, Tour de France Fam, and the Serratigit Challenge by La Vuelta, to have a poor day.
She has her sights set on the World Championships as her final competition of the season, with her sights set on the mixed team relay on September 21 and the elite women's road race on September 24.
