Demi Vollering (NL) has been ruled out of Sunday's European Championships road race as she continues to suffer the effects of concussion from a crash at the recent Tour of Scandinavia.
A week ago, the SD Worx rider hit the deck on the run-in to stage 4 of the stage race, where she started as a favorite to win overall. She suffered a head impact on the pavement, and although she re-ran and completed the last few kilometers of the race, she did not start the next stage.
It is now clear that the crash will have long-term consequences and that Vollering will not be able to compete in the European Championships in Munich on Sunday.
According to the SD Worx team, Vollering is "resting due to concussion symptoms following his crash at the Tour of Scandinavia."
Tarita de Jong was selected to represent the Netherlands in place of Vollering. Because a group sprint is expected on the mostly flat Munich course, the Dutch will use two-time Tour de France stage winner Lorena Wiebes.
In addition to Vollering, Dutch stars Marianne Foss and Annemiek van Grooten will also miss the European Championships: Ellen van Dijk, Leejeanne Marx, Charlotte Kool, Flortje McKay, and Jeanne Kolevaar, Anouska Koster.
Volering, meanwhile, is targeting the World Championship road race in Wollongong on September 10 to re-set up and return, possibly at the Simac Ladies Tour starting August 30 or the Vuelta Challenge starting September 8.
Concussions have received increasing attention in professional cycling and sports in recent years, and cycling is among the sports that have adopted concussion protocols.
The effects of head impact can be overcome quickly in some cases, but can also lead to long-term symptoms such as headaches and dizziness. Most riders avoid looking at screens during recovery.
