2022 Vuelta a España, current GC standings after stage 3

Once again, Jumbo Visma took the overall lead in the Vuelta a España. This time Edoardo Affini took over the red jersey from teammate and overnight leader Mike Tunissen.

The Italian placed 20th on stage 3, the highest of Jumbo-Visma's teammates in the group sprint won by Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) in Breda.

After winning the team time trial in Utrecht, Jumbo Visma took the overall lead for the third consecutive stage with Robert Gesink, Tunissen, and now Affini. Tunissen finished fourth in the second stage, but did not sprint in the third stage, dropping to 153rd and handing the jersey to Affini.

Affini said that it was a special moment for the Dutch team to have such success in the Netherlands and to close out the Grande Pearl of the Vuelta.

"First of all, we won the team time trial in Utrecht, and it is great to share this moment in the team's home country," Affini said.

"I think it was even more special for them with the two Dutch riders taking the overall lead. Also, for me to be at the top of the rankings and to be able to do that here, it's a great feeling."

Affini will have his first rest day as overall leader behind teammate Sam Omen, three-time Vuelta winner Primoš Roglic, Sepp Kuss, Tunissen, and Gesink.

Thirteen seconds behind Jumbo Visma will be Ineos Grenadiers' Ethan Hayter, Richard Kalapas, Pavel Sivakov, and Tao Geoghegan Hart. One second behind them is Quick Step Alphavinir, led by Remco Evenpole, the team's highest ranked driver.

Simon Yates leads the BikeExchange-Jayco team by 31 seconds, while João Almeida represents UAE Team Emirates by 33 seconds.

Israel Premier Tech lost overall contender Michael Woods in a crash on stage 3. The Canadian had been targeting a top-10 finish in the Vuelta, but crashed in the first 50 km, forcing him to abandon the race.

The gap opened up in the last few kilometers of the messy sprint to Utrecht on the second stage the day before, with GC contenders such as Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroen) initially losing time, Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-Easy Post), Sergio Iguita ( Bora-Hansgrohe), Domenico Pozzovivo and Louis Maintus (Intermarché Wanty-Gobert), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Kazakstan) were among the GC contenders to lose time. However, after two hours of deliberation, the race jury awarded them the same time as the group, saving their overall competition ambitions.

The Vuelta a España will resume on Tuesday with stage 4, 152.5 km from Vitoria Gasteiz to La Guardia.
