Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) confirmed that he will focus heavily on winning the green jersey at the Vuelta a España after winning two sprint stages in a row even before the Vuelta a España leaves the Netherlands.
Bennett, recognizing that almost all of the race is still left, won two of the two opening road stages, giving him an impressive 117 points to Mads Pedersen's (Trek-Segafredo) 80. Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) is in third place with 34 points.
Bennett's next chance for a group sprint will probably come on stage 7 to Sistierna. However, there are plenty of mid-stage sprints to favor the points contenders.
Meanwhile, Bora-Hansgrohe is still in the hunt for a stage win after Marco Haller won the BEMER Cyclassics in Germany, and the Irish rider put his poor first half of the season behind him with his second stage win at the 24 Hours of the Vuelta."We still have a long way to go and anything can happen, but we want the sprint jersey.
"Now we have two stages, so we can make bigger decisions about when to take the points and when to keep them. Hopefully we can fight for the green.
As in Utrecht on Saturday, Bennett again lavished lavish praise on his teammates, thanking them for "doing a perfect job."
"Danny [van Poppel] always gets me there. I wasn't sure if I could do it because there were a lot of accelerations, a lot of corners, and my legs were kind of dead. But I managed to pull it off."
"It was a great experience.
Bennett said on Saturday that there was "still room for improvement," but when asked if he would say he was "right there" in the sprint, he smiled and simply replied, "He is on his way."
