Caspar Asgreen's crash at the Tour de Suisse in June resulted in more than a knee injury.
The winner of the 2021 Tour de Flanders joined the Tour de France shortly afterward, and Asgreen, who finished fourth in the time trial for the 2021 World Championships, was sure to be a crowd favorite, even if his chances of winning were slim.
He finished this opening stage in 43rd place, which was his best result of the 2022 Tour, which ended without waiting for stage 9. At the time, Quick-Step announced that the medical staff had decided he should be suspended so as not to jeopardize the second half of the season. Instead, stage 8 of the Tour became Asgreen's last race day of 2022.
"Unfortunately, as a result of the stress of the crash and the subsequent attempts to prepare for the Tour, Kasper developed fatigue syndrome.
"It has therefore been decided that he will not race for the remainder of the season and, after a period of recuperation, will concentrate on preparing for 2023."
Many of Quick Step Alphavinir's biggest goals for the season were achieved, and the early season was busy, especially in the spring classics, with a season-high third place at Strade Bianche.
However, he had to relinquish the national time trial title he held for three consecutive years after missing out on the Danish national road championships held between the Tour de Suisse and Tour de France.
The early end of Asgreen's season also eliminated him from contention for the World Championships, where he has represented Denmark for the past three years and performed well in the individual time trial. The 27-year-old finished 17th in 2019, 6th in 2020, and 4th in 2021, less than three seconds short of a bronze medal.
Asgreen, who is under contract to Quick Step until the end of 2024, also reiterated the team's statement on social media, adding his thanks to the team and its manager, Patrick Lefebvre, for "showing support during this difficult time."
