Buchmann to miss Vuelta a España

Emmanuel Buchmann will miss the Vuelta a España due to a urinary tract infection. Bora-Hansgrohe announced on Tuesday that Matteo Fabro will replace Buchmann.

Buchmann finished seventh overall at the Giro d'Italia in May, helping Jai Hindley to the final victory. At the Vuelta, he was to be part of Bora-Hansgrohe's strong GC challenge that included Hindley, Wilco Kelderman, and Sergio Iguita.

Since finishing fourth overall in the 2019 Tour de France, the German has endured Grand Tour misfortune; his 2020 Tour challenge was jeopardized by a crash at the Criterium du Dauphiné, and while he was sixth overall in last year's Giro, another crash forced him to crash out of the race.

In Buchmann's absence, Fabbro joined the team as climbing support for Hindley, Kelderman, and Higuita. He will not be competing in the Giro and will be competing in his first Grand Tour of the season.

Beulah Hansgrohe will also be looking for a stage win for Sam Bennett in the Vuelta. Bennett will support Danny van Poppel, Ryan Mullen, and Jonas Koch in the sprint.

Bennett, from Ireland, finished fifth at the European Championships on Sunday and expressed confidence that he is on the right track ahead of the Vuelta, which starts Friday in Utrecht.
