Vingegaard Withdraws from World Championships, Denmark Disappointed

Jonas Vingegaard has withdrawn from the Road World Championships. The Danish national selector expressed disappointment in the decision of the Tour de France champion and his trade team, Jumbo-Visma.

Vingegaard, who beat Tadej Pogachar to win the Tour last month, was part of Denmark's plans to compete in the world championships in Australia, but Jumbo-Visma reportedly made a different schedule for the 25-year-old Vingegaard later in the season reportedly.

The World Championships on September 25 will not clash directly with any major races, but Vingegaard is likely to focus on the Italian Classic the following weekend through to Il Lombardia on October 8.

"I had a dialogue with Jumbo Visma before and after the Tour de France. And after the Tour they announced that it was not in their plans for Vingegaard to run the World Championships," Danish coach Anders Lund told TV 2 Sport.

"I always hope that every professional raises his or her hand to run for the national team.

"But I take it into account and I can see from the national team that it is effective anyway. That's why I sleep well at night."

The road race in Wollongong is 267 km over a hilly course with an elevation gain of nearly 4,000 meters. While grueling, the climbs are not long and tough enough to play to the strengths of Vingegaard, who has never run a world championship.

Denmark has already selected four riders, with the remaining four yet to be announced.

Jakob Fuglsang, Magnus Cort, Søren Kragh Andersen, and Mattias Skjelmose are all assured of a place, but the most notable rider yet to secure a spot is 2019 World Champion Mads Pedersen. Classic specialist Kasper Asgreen will not be competing, as he ended his season early due to fatigue.

"I am a privileged national coach when it comes to the countries and the athletes. This is because these races generally suit the Danes well. That's what makes the Danish national team unique. Even if some of the stars are not there, we are good at taking advantage of the team's opportunities."
