Bob Jungels will leave AG2R Citroën for Bora-Hansgrohe in Germany next season.
Jungels had a difficult few seasons after being diagnosed with endoarterial fibrosis, but made a comeback with a memorable long-distance solo victory on stage 9 of the 2022 Tour de France.
After finishing 12th overall in Paris, Jungels once again had an optimistic outlook on his career, but decided to change his environment to achieve his next ambition.
He joins the evolving Bora-Hansgrohe team for an unknown length of contract other than being on a "multi-year" deal.
"I am very excited to be running with Bora-Hansgrohe next season," Jungels said.
"As a team, I feel it is the right fit for me to get back to consistent performances on the World Tour and I look forward to playing a big role in the team's victories next season.
"I am confident that I can still grow as a rider and I will work hard to do so. For me, I feel like this change is the beginning of something big."
[14Jungels turned pro in 2013 with the Radioshack team (now Trek-Segafredo), then spent five years with Quick Step and the past two with AG2R. He has won time trials, led out in sprints, finished in the top 10 in Grand Tours, and won one-day classics in both mountains and cobbles.
In 2021, he signed with AG2R along with Greg Van Avermaat, but had a disappointing start and was soon diagnosed with intra-arterial fibrosis (a disease that limits blood flow). A double operation and much rest time allowed him to recover from his "dark" moment and rediscover himself this season.
Beulah Hansgrohe is clearly impressed and feels there is room for further improvement.
"Bob is a very interesting rider. It feels like he's been in the peloton forever, but he's still of racing age," said sport director Rolf Aldag.
"He brings incredible experience, but also a lot of potential. We also believe that this potential has not yet been fully realized and we want to work with Bob on his development"
.
"In terms of rider type, he fits perfectly into our multi-captain strategy. We want to continue to add depth to our team so that our rivals will have a harder time predicting our races. Bob is very versatile and will no doubt play a key role in important races."
Jungels is the first signing of the season for Bora Hansgrohe. They are moving Wilco Kelderman to Jumbo Visma, but already have the bulk of their team in place for 2023, including leaders Hindley, Alexandre Vlasov, Leonard Kamuna, Max Schachmann, and Sergio Iguita.
