Beulah Hansgrohe has selected Sam Bennett, Jai Hindley, Sergio Igita, Wilco Kelderman, and Emmanuel Buchmann for the Vuelta a España.
Senior sport director Rolf Aldag told Cycling News that the team's Vuelta lineup is a puzzle with many pieces and many considerations, but the German team chose to give Bennett a chance in the sprint, while at the same time reiterating its overall class The German team chose to give Bennett a chance in the sprint, while at the same time reiterating its multi-leader strategy in the overall class.
Bennett, with the support of Ryan Mullen and leadout Danny van Poppel, will run the sprint that will dominate the first week of the Spanish Grand Tour.
"We have world-class riders in every area, including Sam Bennett in the sprint. And then of course there is the GC. So the list is pretty long and there are a lot of options," Aldag explained to Cycling News.
"At the same time, we are in the transition to GC racing and our team manager, Ralf Denk, has made it very clear what we are aiming for. Winning a Grand Tour was a three-year project, and we accomplished that in May. So we have the freedom of not having to chase what we have already achieved. It's a very luxurious situation [in the Vuelta]. It will be interesting to learn how the sprinter teams and GC goals combine and what type of riders they need.
Beulah Hansgrohe has put her all into GC at the Giro and Tour, ruling out Bennett and other sprint options. Hindley won the Giro with a late attack on the final mountain stage Passo Fedaia, and won the final time trial in Verona.
The 2018 Vuelta a España was Hindley's first Grand Tour; the 26-year-old spent July preparing for the Vuelta before returning to racing in Clasica San Sebastian. He followed that up with a seventh place overall finish at the Vuelta a Burgos.
Iguita won a stage at the Tour de Pollogne and led the race until the decisive time trial, his second ride in the Vuelta for the Colombian, who finished 14th in 2019.
Hindley and Higuain are set to lead the race, but Wilco Kelderman, another Grand Tour podium finisher, and Emmanuel Buchmann, fourth in the 2019 Tour de France, have multiple cards to play and plenty of climbing strength.
Mullen and Van Poppel will support Bennett in the sprint, with German domestique Jonas Koch rounding out the team.
