There was only one chance to sprint in this year's Arctic Race in Norway.
Stage winner Dylan Groenewegen did exactly what he came to Norway to do, but not Team DSM sprinter Cece Boll. While fellow countryman Dylan took his seventh win of the season, the 27-year-old Boll slumped to 30th place.
For Boll, who won a stage in Paris-Nice last year, the day was emblematic of a 2022 season that has been plagued repeatedly by illness and injury and has never come together.
"I was really disappointed yesterday. We made too many mistakes to make it to the finals. I was really disappointed yesterday."
"We had some bad luck and many days like yesterday. So it wasn't that easy. It was pretty hard."
Boll said he was in good shape in various phases of the year, but bad luck set him back several times, including a training camp injury, a spring illness, and a COVID-19 infection.
"At the Tour de Suisse I got a COVID-19 infection. He said, "I was pretty out of shape after Paris-Nice, and I had some knee problems in the winter. I was in good shape at times, I was riding well, but I think I'm a little out of balance. But I think my balance is a little off."
Boll's contract with Team DSM is expiring and he is strongly rumored to be moving to B&B Hotels-KTM.
He could not confirm the move and said he has not yet signed a contract for next season, but added that news of a new destination should arrive soon.
"I've had a good time here and we'll know when we get more news about the future. 'I can't say too much,' he said. I haven't signed anywhere, but I don't think I'll be here much longer."
However, there is still time to turn the season around before winter and the chance to finish his time at DSM in the best possible way.
"We have a really good race program. Hamburg next, then the Tour of Britain, then the one-day race in Belgium. Those are good races for me and I'm looking forward to them. Hopefully I'll be in a little bit better shape.
