Sam Bennett is set to race for Deceuninck Quickstep in 2020 after being fired by Beulah Hansgrohe.

Bennett, an Irish sprinter and current national champion, had been trying to switch teams for months, but in a short announcement, Bora-Hansgrohe finally gave up the fight to keep him.

"After the amazing success stories of the last few years, Beulah Hansgrohe and Sam Bennett have decided to go their separate ways. [Over the past six years, Beulah Hansgrohe has developed Sam Bennett into the best sprinter in the peloton. However, this background has made it increasingly difficult to align team and rider goals. Therefore, the management of Bora-Hansgrohe decided to accept Sam Bennett's wish to leave Bora-Hansgrohe and continue his journey with another team."

The German WorldTour concluded its message: "Bora-Hansgrohe wishes Sam Bennett a happy future and hopes he can realize his sporting dreams.

Bennett tried to leave Beulah Hansgrohe after being eliminated in this year's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France. This season he took 13 wins, 11 at the World Tour level, including two at the Vuelta a España.

His success in the sprint led to Dečuninck-Quick Step making an offer to Bennett to replace Elia Viviani. This sparked a legal battle and the case was sent to the UCI Arbitration Commission.

Deceuninck-QuickStep team manager Patrick Lefevere revealed to Cyclingnews that Beulah Hansgrohe offered to swap Bennett for Alvaro Hodeg, but Bennett refused: "I am not interested in swapping cows I'm not interested in that."

Bennett did not attend Bora Hansgrohe's recent winter get-together, and it was revealed that he has signed with Dečuninck Quickstep and will wear their blue and white colors. Bennett's move will reportedly be accompanied by trusted lead-out man Shane Archibald, who returned to Beulah in April.
