Wattbike Atom arrives in the U.S. in time for winter.

As of today, November 13, 2019, Wattbike is officially rolling out the Atom to the U.S. market, making it one of the first dedicated smart bike models to be released in the United States, a trend that has been on the rise recently.

If you want to power through the winter months with the intensity of your workouts intact, the Atom, which will sell for $2,599 including shipping anywhere in the US, is a tool worth considering.

The Atom was originally released in September 2017, and Cycling News has previously showcased its capabilities in our Wattbike Atom review. Logistics and supply have been the biggest hurdles that have prevented Wattbike from tackling the US market to date, but with the recent influx of smart bikes, including the launch of the Wahoo KICKR Bike, it was now or never for Wattbike.

Smart connectivity, improved indoor trainer mechanics, and the advent of training software such as Zwift and TrainerRoad have all transformed the concept of riding in the living room from a training grind to a training tool.

With an assembled mass of 44 kg, the Atom is designed to be a set-and-forget tool that cannot be carried up and down stairs, but can be plugged in and connected to a device and ready to go in seconds.

In addition to the indoor trainer-specific construction that must provide stability and resistance to pedaling at full power, Atom's touch points can be fully customized to replicate your everyday ride. The handlebars are widely adjustable and can be fitted with time trial extensions. The seat post is equipped with a conventional rail-mounted clamp to accommodate the seat of your choice.

Mechanics are the most challenging aspect for indoor trainers, and Wattbike engineers have attempted to replicate the feedback and feel of rear wheel and drivetrain rotation via a magnetic interface. % gradient can be simulated.

Power absorption peaks at 2000w, and representing Sagan's inner surface does not overload the Atom. Data collection is also very accurate, ensuring that riders using Atom stay within their training goals.

The $2599 price tag is an investment for even the most dedicated indoor training warrior or Zwift addict, but for that price you get a dedicated indoor cycling solution. If you don't have that kind of cash, a summary of the cheapest Zwift setups would be helpful.

Many cyclists like the feeling of a road bike running on rollers or turbo trainers, but there are durability issues with chain, cassette, and tire wear, as well as corrosion of the top and down tubes from moisture during training, especially bottle cage mounts and stem bolts. With the Atom, you can crank up the wattage, work up a sweat, and avoid the risk of corroding your favorite frame.
