The Israel Cycling Academy has signed 30-year-old American Travis McCabe to its 2020 World Tour Roster.
McCabe comes to the Israeli registered team from the American Continental team Froise Pro Cycling. Prior to that, he was a two-time U.S. criterium champion at the continental level with Team Smart Stop and Holovesco Citadel.
"Ever since I started riding a bike and watching the Danish film Hell Sunday, it has been my dream to race abroad and at the World Tour level," McCabe said in a statement provided by the team.
McCabe has won nine races with a UCI ranking of 2.1 or higher, including a third stage win at the Tour of Langkawi earlier this year, adding to his two stage wins at the same race in 2017. McCabe boasts four stage wins at the Tour of Utah, tying him with EF Education First's Lachlan Morton for the most wins in total, as well as stage wins at the Herald Sun Tour and Colorado Classic, respectively.
While there are a smattering of international results, McCabe's greatest successes have come in big and small races in the United States. His move to full-time racing on the international calendar will give him a chance to prove himself in cycling's top class.
"One of my goals has always been progression, and I feel like this is another part of that. I want to prove to myself and others that racing at the top level in Europe is where I belong."
"I know I'm physically capable of running at the World Tour level, and I'm not afraid to hit the bars and fight for the lead in the ICA, which is like an American criterium race except 200 km longer.
McCabe is well acquainted with the Israeli Cycling Academy, having raced against them previously in Utah and Colorado.
"The ICA has always raced in the U.S. and has competed against them in international races.
Kjell Carlström, team manager of the Israel Cycling Academy, said McCabe will get his own chance, but after signing Andre Greipel, a strong German sprinter in the off-season, ICA He said he would also be a valuable member of the lead-out train.
"Travis has several wins every year and has a lot of experience, although he doesn't race much in Europe. Travis will be an important part of the leadout as well."
McCabe summarized his goals for 2020 in three key areas.
"So my goal for 2020 is first and foremost to be a valuable teammate and ambassador for the Israel Cycling Academy.
"I am very, very excited to be a part of the Israel Cycling Academy, and I think the ICA is helping pave the way for future cyclists who may have never heard of the sport. I think we are a truly international team and I am very proud to represent the United States."
