Tom Dumoulin on the mend after treatment for intestinal parasites

Tom Dumoulin is hoping his early season health problems have subsided, announcing on social media that he has been treated for intestinal parasites and is already feeling better.

Dumoulin, who has not raced since last season's Criterium du Dauphiné due to a knee injury sustained in a crash at the Giro d'Italia, was scheduled to finish the season at this month's Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, but before the race began, he fell ill

Last week, he was forced to drop out of the race due to illness.

Last week he announced that he would miss the Tirreno-Adriatico and Milano-Sanremo races.

Jumbo Visma ordered a series of tests to rule out Epstein-Barr virus, which has had a major impact on the seasons of riders who have recently retired with the disease, including Mark Cavendish, Esteban Chaves, and Benyat Inchausti.

According to the team, Dumoulin was suffering from intestinal upset and low energy.

"As you all know, I have been in bad shape lately," Dumoulin wrote on Instagram. 'Last week they found a parasite in my intestines and I've been on medication ever since. I had a good workout today and over the weekend and am feeling much better. I hope to plan the start of the season and my next goals soon! I'll keep you posted."

Dumoulin will share the Tour de France leadership with Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk on the Jumbo-Visma team.

Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome is also suffering from a parasitic infection. Jeremy Roy, Fabio Ferrigne, Igor Astarloa, and Romain Feillu have all missed races due to toxoplasmosis. Former Tour winner Laurent Fignon suffered from tapeworm.

Neither Dumoulin nor his team identified the parasite for which he was treated.
