NTT time trial specialist Victor Kampenaerts is not looking to immediately break his own hour record set in April 2019. The Belgian had hoped to break the 55.089km record he set at the London Velodrome this April during the coronavirus blockade, but the idea was shelved as unworkable in the current pandemic situation.
Bjarne Riis, the new manager of two-time European time trial champion NTT, said Thursday that Campenaerts' attempt to break the record he set last year (beating Bradley Wiggins' record of 54.526 km set in 2015) was a "great idea" and that the team wanted to back him up, but it was deemed impossible.
As part of a Zoom interview with various media outlets, including Cycling News, he criticized Team Ineos manager Dave Brailsford's recent "If it is deemed unsafe, Ineos will consider not participating in the Tour de France." He criticized his comments.
"It was a nice idea by Victor, but I knew we would get little support from the UCI. It wasn't realistic because of the number of protocols that would have to be followed and the involvement of so many people." If it had been possible, though, he would have had our full support."
[8Earlier this week, Team Ineos' Filippo Ganna, the current individual pursuit world champion and world record holder, told the Italian press that he would also like to attempt to break Campenalto's hour record.
"Victor has raised the bar to a ridiculous level, but the challenge must be accepted and records are there to be broken," he told Tuttobiciweb (opens in new tab). Even my world record in individual Pursuit will be broken sooner or later."
"Once the near future of the race is set and I have a clear idea of what I need to do with the team, I will propose it. If you have time, why don't you give it a try?"
Ganna said.
