In part one of this special podcast series, we reported on the devastating 2014 Garmin-Sharp team crash in the team time trial at the opening round of the Giro d'Italia. (Opens in new tab) In this edition, Nathan Haas (opens in new tab) and guests Ryder Hesjedal, Fabian Wegmann, and Dylan Van Barre recap Garmin-Sharp's second week at the 2014 Giro d'Italia.
After losing Dan Martin in a crash on day one, the team battled through a tough first week of bad weather. When they arrived at the start of Foligno on stage 8, which we will cover in this podcast, Hesjedal regained his GC position and a crucial top 10 finish in their quest for a stage win. Haas finished 12th after Tyler Farrar crashed on stage 10, and Hesjedal continued in the top 10 the next day. Wegman was forced to retire after crashing on stage 11 to Savona.
The episode is again hosted by Haas, and in the first installment of the Peloton Brief podcast here (opens in new tab), Haas talks to teammates Dan Martin, Hesjedal, and Farrar about the opening stage of the 2014 Giro d'Italia and, They talk about how the team fought through after a disastrous start and crash in the opening team time trial in Belfast.
The riders faced arguably the biggest challenge of their careers, but now look back on those days with nostalgia.
