We first learned that the Cannondale Factory Racing duo of Manuel Fumich and Henrique Avancini were testing the new Cannondale Scalpel in photos from the Tankwa Trek, an MTB stage race held in South Africa this past February.
Premature mechanics and trailside repairs led to the discovery of what appeared to be a no-brand Scarpel test mule equipped with a pivotless rear triangle. After much speculation, Cannondale's official announcement today of the new full suspension finally confirms that these are indeed prototypes for the 2021 Cannondale Scalpel full suspension.
The big news lies in the brand's new patented 4-bar flex-pivot suspension system. Essentially a pivotless Horst link, the durable carbon fiber flex zones articulate without the weight or deflection of bolts or bearings.
Available in 100mm and 120mm travel options, the 100mm model is more XC-specific, with a 68-degree head angle, longer reach, and shorter chainstays for improved singletrack agility. The Scalpel SE, on the other hand, is geared toward trail riders, taking advantage of 120mm of front and rear travel, a looser front end (67 degrees), high-capacity tires (up to 2.4"), and a dropper post.
The new all-carbon frame is one of the lightest full-suspension mountain bikes in its category at just over 1900g including shock. Other notable additions include a new stash kit system, Dynaplugs, and a CO2 canister located on the downtube.
The new Scalpel is available in eight models, including the Scalpel SE and the women-only Scalpel Carbon 2 and Carbon SE. The model lineup is available in sizes S, M, L, and XL. The women's models are only available in S, M, and L.
