Primoz Roglic said he does not expect any problems between the Jumbo-Visma leadership trio at the postponed Tour de France, which runs from August 29 to September 20.
The Slovenian will lead Jumbo-Visma in France along with past podium finishers Tom Dumoulin and Steven Kruijswijk. In an interview with Colombian newspaper El Tiempo (opens in new tab), Roglic said the trio will join forces at the Tour and the strongest rider could be the leader.
"I think it's very simple. We want to win the Tour as a team and in the end the best rider will win. I think it's an honest race [especially for a three-week race]."
Roglic has yet to compete in the 2020 race, as a coronavirus pandemic interrupted the event before he could make his season debut. The season is scheduled to resume in August.
"It's like starting this season after the winter break," Roglic said. 'Everyone hasn't raced for a while, and I didn't start racing this year either.'
The Tour de France will ultimately depend on a decision by the French government, and it is unknown if spectators will be allowed to watch the race along the roadside if it does take place.
"For my part, I hope the race will be held. 'Ultimately, I have no influence over whether there will be spectators or not, or whatever it is. Ultimately, I want the race to be open to the public and normal. I think all will give extra energy. But at this point, we have to be content with having a race instead of expecting everything."
Roglic last competed in the Tour in 2018, when he finished fourth overall, but skipped the race last year, finishing third in the Giro d'Italia and taking the final overall win in the Vuelta a España.
The 2020 Vuelta was postponed and rescheduled from October 20 to November 8, but Roglic said he had not yet made any plans after the Tour de France.
"I don't know, anything is possible after the Tour, but it's hard to make plans at the moment. I want to get ready for the Tour first."
Roglic will camp in the highlands in July and participate in the Tour de Ain (August 7-9) and the Criterium du Dauphiné (August 12-16). The Slovenian said that all competitors will be "starting from scratch" in Nice, and when asked how to beat defending champion Egan Bernal (Ineos), he answered succinctly.
"You have to try to be better than him," Roglic said. I don't know what's going to happen. It will be a crazy race for sure. There are some big mountains and some decisive moments right from the start. Let's see what happens."
