Philippa York will be a guest on Zwift during the month of June after the cycling and running online platform announced that it will support the charity Athlete Ally during Pride Month For the second year in a row, Athlete Ally will receive a $25 000 donation, as well as a number of online rides set for June, with events taking place on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Athletes Ally is a charitable organization that works in the sports world to develop reform and more inclusive campaigns, and York will also collaborate and participate in rides throughout the month. Many other sports personalities will be participating at various locations.
"Normally at this time of year there would be a variety of Pride events taking place in towns and cities around the world. But with Covid-19 stopping or limiting outdoor gatherings, it's a great idea for Zwift to support the LGBTQi+ community by having Pride on Ride on its digital platform," York told Cycling News.
"Too many community members feel that the sport is not for them, so it's important to show that it isn't. Pride on Ride is an opportunity for people who haven't considered cycling before to try something new, interact, and feel the support of others. It's easy to be socially isolated now, and riding with others can help with that. I don't have to worry about being too slow or struggling with the terrain. It's not a race, it's a social ride for everyone."
"I just started using Zwift myself and will be participating in rides every Tuesday and Saturday during June, so anyone who sees me online is welcome to say hello. Zwift co-founder and CEO Eric Min echoed York's words in a press release issued by the company.
"Zwift has several core values, one of which is 'One Zwift for All. We have always looked to champion inclusivity at Zwift, which is why we are especially proud to once again partner with Athlete Ally to support better inclusivity in all sports." "This is our second year partnering with Athlete Ally and they are doing great work to end homophobia in sports and activate the athlete community to take a leadership role in advocating for LGBTQI+ equality. I look forward to participating in their weekly rides and runs."
