April Teyssie surprised the women's WorldTour contingent by winning the first stage of the Women's Virtual Tour de France, giving her drops team a huge boost. With the win, Teyssie also took her first Tour de France maillot jaune and the team led the points race on day one.
The 19-year-old defeated Christine Faulkner (Tibco-Silicon Valley Bank) and Chantal van den Broeck-Blaak (Boels Dolmans) in a powerful sprint at the line to win the race and come close at the end of the 2018 campaign. The win marked a significant step forward for the British national team, which suffered a close call at the end of the 2018 campaign.
The team only survived thanks to donors and cash raised through a crowdfunding campaign after then-partner Trek pulled out and decided to start its own team.
Tacy, who only joined the team late last year, was almost speechless after her impressive and well-deserved win, and while the win was online rather than on the road, its impact cannot be overstated for a team like Drops.
The virtual Tour de France was streamed online via Youtube, and regular Tour de France broadcasters also aired the action from Zwift's Watopia world.
"It's a big win for us as a team," Teixeira said at the victory press conference.
"It gives us great press coverage because we are the first women in history to win a virtual Tour de France stage. It's fantastic. It's great for our team and we've been able to give back to all our sponsors."
As a matter of fact, the drops were much deserved after Jocelyn Roden's consistent performance on the climbs. Jocelyn Roden was consistent on the climbs and did enough to lead the team to the mountains jersey.
"Just keep the power high. With the turbo, the wattage per kilometer is also important," Teisey said after the race.
"With about halfway to go, I think it was the last KOM, me and my teammate Jocelyn went for Queen of the Mountains together. She came in first and I came in third, but my aero was boosting, so I decided to save it."
"With 300m to go, my brother clicked the power up. Full throttle. This gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of the race. I still can't believe it."
The women's virtual Tour de France continues on Sunday with a 29.5km stage on Mount Watopia.
