USA Cycling announced Monday that two riders representing the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Leogang, Austria this week have tested positive for COVID-19.
Hannah Finchamp (Orange Seal) missed last weekend's Nove Mesto World Cup after testing positive before the cross-country competition. She was then tested a second time in Prague and the presence of COVID-19 was confirmed. Despite the positive test, Hanna is in good physical condition and has shown minimal symptoms."
"I am devastated to find myself in this position. I tested positive for the Covid-19 virus on Saturday. It is still shocking and heartbreaking to say these words," Finchamp said in a press release.
According to her trade team, Finchamp had tested negative in three consecutive PCR tests before testing positive and had taken more measures than necessary to prevent infection.
"Since the pandemic began in March, I have been extremely careful. I have kept my exposure low by self-quarantining at home, wearing a mask at all times in public places, and limiting my grocery store shopping to once every two weeks. Before flying to Europe, I tested negative for PCR COVID-19 three times, at different intervals, to ensure that I was not bringing anything with me. When I arrived in Europe, my viral tests were still negative."
According to USA Cycling, Pieter Heumeyer, a soigneur on the Bear Development team, also tested positive for COVID-19 and returned to Kutzbuchel, Austria, on Sunday.
Both are in quarantine, and USA Cycling is working with the Austrian Health Organization to track close contact between Finn Champ and Heumeyer.
USA Cycling tested the entire team prior to their departure from Nove Mesto and all test results were negative, but the athletes and staff will be retested before arriving at the World Championships, which begin on Wednesday, October 7, with the Cross Country Team Relay and Men's and Women's E-Bike Championships

The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships will be part of an extremely shortened 2020 calendar, as the Coronavirus pandemic has canceled all but two World Cups (both held last week in Nove Mesto). Finn Champ finished 46th in the elite women's cross-country.
Unlike the UCI Road World Championships, which only had elite events, the UCI held a full schedule of Mountain Bike World Championships. The men's and women's junior cross-country races will be held on Thursday, the U23 men's race on Friday, and the U23 women's and elite men's and women's races on Saturday. The junior and elite downhill races will take place on Sunday.
