17 Police Officers Test Positive for COVID-19 at Giro d'Italia E-Bike

Seventeen police motorcycle escort officers tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus at the Giro d'Italia (open in new tab) E-bike event associated with the men's Giro d'Italia race.

According to a report by Italian news agency ANSA, the infected were found Monday while the Giro d'Italia and Giro E-bike events were being held in the Abruzzo region. All police officers have been quarantined to a hotel in Francavilla a Mare.

RCS Sport told Cycling News that it has identified 17 infected officers, all of whom were police officers escorting the Giro E-bike event, which ends one hour before the men's race. according to RCS Sport, the 17 officers not subject to the protection of the Giro d'Italia race bubble. The officers were replaced to ensure the safety of the event.

According to RCS Sport, the police officers for the Giro E-Bike event did not mix with those escorting the Giro d'Italia and stayed in different hotels during the first week of the race. All of the police bikes escorting the Giro d'Italia race tested negative for COVID-19 in a recent test.

A total of 26 bike police officers, 12 support staff, and other local police bike officers will accompany the Giro d'Italia and Giro E-bike escorts.
