Filippo Ganna tested positive for coronavirus

Time trial world champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) has returned from the track national team training camp in Montichiari, Lombardy, after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Italian national team was in Lombardy to prepare for the 2020 UEC Track European Championships to be held at the Kolodruma Stadium in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from November 11-15.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported on Thursday that Ganna apparently tested negative for coronavirus in a routine test that all members of the training camp received on Tuesday evening. However, after showing "mild discomfort" on Wednesday, Ganna was confined to a hotel room that day and was tested again on Thursday and tested positive, the Italian federation said.

"All swab tests performed on other members of the national team were negative," the ANSA newspaper reported Federciclismo as saying.

"Further tests will be carried out over the next few days, up to the day before the team departs for the European Championships on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Ganna's last road event was the Giro d'Italia in October, won by Ineos teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart. Ganna won three individual time trial races in the Italian Grand Tour, including a solo victory on the hilly fifth stage from Miletto to Camigliatello Silano. [Ganna won the Italian time trial title in August, the TT stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico in September, and the world TT title at the end of the month.
