New UK Electric Bike Subsidy Could Cut Retail Price by a Third

According to a recent report in The Times, the British government is considering a subsidy that could reduce the price of a new e-bike by a third.

With more and more people using bicycles as a means of transportation, the British government is looking to add a "no sweat" way for those looking for an easy way to get around, such as riders who commute in business attire or older riders.

This new taxpayer assistance program will likely take the form of subsidies similar to those available for plug-in electric vehicles. The Times reported that the UK government is considering subsidies of up to £3,000 to appeal to potential buyers who are on the fence.

Cycling UK voiced support for these donations, noting that eBikes are currently the only form of electrified transportation without such relief.

While the final wording of the plan will not be announced until spring 2021, Transportation Minister Chris Heaton-Harris said the government is "developing a national support program to boost e-bike adoption to levels seen in many other countries."

During the COVID-19 craze, eBike and scooter sales more than tripled over the past year, alongside a significant increase in sales of analog non-pedal-assisted bikes across all categories.

In the UK, most e-bikes fall under the obligations of the EPAC (Electric Pedal Assisted Cycle) Amendment Regulations and have the same legal status as standard bicycles. To qualify for these regulations, an e-bike's motor is limited to 250 watts of assist, cannot be started unless it is already running, and stops when it reaches a speed of 25 km/h.
