Contrary to some reports, Egan Bernal's younger brother will not be moving to Europe to race under the guidance of Gianni Savio for at least another three years.
Ronald Bernal is now only 15 years old and famously celebrated his brother's 2019 Tour de France win on the Champs-Elysées. He is believed to possess some of the same talents as his older siblings, but will not head to Europe until he is at least 18 years old.
News of a second Bernal in the peloton surfaced after a report on the Italian website Tuttobiciweb. They passed on Savio's words: "We want to help him grow, just as we did with Egan.
Somehow, Savio's desire to help the Bernal family somehow got lost in translation, with some publications suggesting that Ronald was already in Europe, even though his brother was spending the winter at home in Colombia.
To get to the bottom of this story, Cycling News called Savio.
"I spoke with Vladimir Kiuminat, who runs Bernal's fan club in Colombia, and we talked about Ronald. He told me that Ronald has talent like his brother, and I would be happy to help him, as I did with Egan, but not until he is 18," Savio stated to Cycling News.
"There is obviously a misunderstanding about what I said.
"Everyone knows how I helped Egan grow up, and I would do the same for Ronald, but it is too early to assume that he will automatically follow in Egan's footsteps. Egan wants to protect his brother, and so do I. I'm not surprised that Egan wants to protect his brother.
Ronald is a better sprinter than his brother and is said to have the ability to attack his rivals. He has competed in local mountain bike races near Zipaquila, Colombia, but has not obtained a license or signed any kind of contract.
Egan Bernal is currently in Colombia to continue his recovery from the back injury that forced him to abandon his 2020 Tour de France. He worked in the gym for several weeks and underwent a special bike fit in Germany, but it is unclear if he has begun training for the 2021 season.
In October, Bernal told ESPN Colombia, "The problem is that one leg is longer than the other. That's what caused my spine to scoliosis.
