On New Year's Day, Team Jumbo-Visma will officially switch to Cervelo bikes, with one exception: Wielerflits (opens in new tab) reports that in the middle of a wet and wild cyclocross season, Wout van Aert will start and end the 'cross season on the same bike at the January 1 GP in Baal He will start on his current Bianchi at the GP Sven Nys in Baal on January 1 and finish the 'cross season on the same bike.
Jumbo Visma will ride a Cervelo bike in 2021, changing both the men's WorldTour team and the new women's Continental team.
Van Aert has already been seen testing a new Cervelo road bike, but will use a Bianchi cross bike to maintain consistency through the World Championships at the end of January.
The Dutch news media reported that Van Aert may be upgrading his existing cross bike with a new one in the New Year to match the yellow and black team colors, rather than the Bianchi brand's famous celeste colors.
Van Aert won Sunday's muddy World Cup race in Dendermonde to take the overall World Cup leader's jersey. It was a convincing victory, more than three minutes ahead of rival and second-place finisher Mathieu van der Pol (Alpecin Phoenix).
"It was a difficult race, but I love these situations. It was one of the craziest crosses I've ever done." Van Aert, who took his second win of the season, said on the team's website. It was epic, and I really enjoyed it."
After Friday's start in Barre, the fifth of eight rounds in the X2O Badkamers Trofee series, Van Aert will compete in the World Cup in Hulst on January 3. Also on the schedule are the Belgian National Championships (Meulebeke) on January 9 and the X2O Trophy Race (Hamme) on January 23, before facing defending champion Van der Pol again at the World Championships (Ostend) at the end of January.
The Bianchi bikes used on the road in Jumbo-Visma were auctioned online by the team in December, with the sale closing on Sunday. Out of a total of 28 items, five bikes ridden by Van Aert were sold, with his Aquila TT Celeste being the second highest bidder at €17,000. The bike was credited with helping the Belgian win a silver medal at the World Championships in Imola in September.
