Groenewegen to return from 9-month crash ban at Tour of Hungary

Dylan Groenewegen will return to racing at the Tour of Hungary in mid-May, five days after a nine-month ban for the crash that nearly ended Fabio Jacobsen's career at the Tour de Pologne.

The Jumbo Visma sprinter announced his 2021 schedule at the team's preseason media day on Friday. Somewhat surprisingly, his program only includes 14-day World Tour races such as the Euro Eyes Cyclassics Hamburg, Bink Bank Tour, and Tour of Guangxi.

Jacobsen, 27, was banned from competing in the Pollogne crash in Hungary in November. Jacobsen suffered serious facial injuries and was forced into a coma after being driven into a barrier in Katowice. He is awaiting another surgery next month, but hopes to return to racing at some point in 2021.

Meanwhile, Groenewegen said he hopes to be allowed to return to the peloton when he returns to racing less than four months later.

"I hope to find my place in the peloton again soon and be able to enjoy racing again," Groenewegen said in a statement released by the team. He will be racing smaller races to get back into the rhythm of racing, but will not be competing in the Vuelta a EspaƱa, which is realistically his only Grand Tour.

"We talked about it a lot," he said. 'A lot has happened and I will take that into account when I return. Obviously, I would love to win another sprint, but the most important thing is to find my place in the peloton first."

Groenewegen also spoke about his crash in Pollogne. In this crash, he went toward Jacobsen on the fast downhill at the finish and caused a pile-up.

"I don't think it was right that I went off my line. 'I also wonder how this was possible. I certainly blame myself."

"I try to reconstruct what I thought in the full sprint. I can look at it as many times as I want, but each time I am shocked. The impact of a crash is especially devastating because of the high speeds, over 80 kilometers per hour. The confusion afterward is also terrible. It happened unintentionally, and I am very sorry."

Groenewegen will return to racing at the Tour of Hungary, May 12-16, and will take on the Tour of Norway in May, followed by the Lund um Cologne, ZLM Tour, Dutch National Championships, and Tour de Wallonie in June and July, then EuroAids Cyclassics, Binkbank Tour, Campioenschap van Vlaanderen, Sparkassen-Munsterland Giro, and Tour of the Wide West.
