The route initially climbs up Mottarone (5.6 km) at an average of 6.5 percent, peaking at 85 km.

The area has a popular cable car that carries tourists from the resort of Stresa to the summit of Mottarone.

The cable car accident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, but the cause of the accident remains unknown. According to local reports, the cable failed about 300 meters (984 feet) from the top of the mountain and the cabin may have fallen into a forested area 20 meters below.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi described the accident as "tragic" and an investigation was launched.

"With special thoughts for the seriously injured children and their families, the whole government offers its condolences to the families of the victims," he said in a statement, the BBC reported.
