Bastion Cycles has confirmed that the handlebar unit used by Alex Porter when he crashed in the Team Pursuit qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics belonged to the company and is working with the Australian Olympic team to determine the cause of the failure.
Porter & Co.
Porter was in the tail end of a four-man team when he crashed, causing his handlebar to break and he slid off the board. The team was then suspended and later repeated the qualifying run, which resulted in a fifth place finish and elimination from the gold and silver medal competition.
"Our team is working with the Australian Olympic team to figure out what caused the handlebars to break in the four-man Pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics. [Our first concern was for Alex Porter and the entire team. We are in constant contact with the Australian Olympic cycling team and coaches and I can assure you that we are using every means to investigate why this happened"
.
The Australian track team is riding an Argon 18 2020 Electron Pro, but the Canadian brand issued a statement earlier saying its handlebars were not used during the incident, which was also confirmed by AusCycling.
The cycling organization did not mention Bastion in its statement and said it had launched an investigation into the incident but that it would take time to determine exactly what happened. Australia's men's team pursuit squad will be back in action during the heats at the Izu Velodrome in Tokyo on Tuesday, followed by the medal round on Wednesday.
Porter, Kel O'Brien, Sam Welsford, and Lee Howard's fifth-place qualifying finish means that while they missed out on gold and silver medal chances in team pursuit at this Olympics, a bronze medal remains a possibility.
"Our focus at this point is to continue to support the Australian cycling team for the remainder of the Games," Bastion said.
