Lisa Klein will be leading Canyon-SRAM in the Simac Ladies Tour in the Netherlands from August 24-29, showcasing her strong time trial prowess. Klein will return to racing for the trade team after winning gold in the Team Pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics.
"I feel great. It was a great time to celebrate my gold medal with friends, family, and community at home. I appreciate everyone's support," Klein said.
"I was really disappointed in the individual time trial in Tokyo because the hilly course didn't suit me. This week at the Shimac Tour, I want to give my best in the prologue and the time trial."Klein had a strong early season this spring, finishing 6th overall at the Healthy Aging Tour, 3rd at Nokere Coors, and 5th at Scheldepri. He then won the prologue and stage 2b time trial and took the overall win at the Baloise Belgian Tour in July.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Klein represented Germany in the individual time trial, finishing 13th behind gold medalist Annemiek van Grooten of the Netherlands. Turning to track racing, Klein was part of the German women's Team Pursuit team that defeated Great Britain in the final race to win the gold medal in 4:04.249. The team also included Mieke Kroeger, Lisa Brenauer, and Franziska Brause.
The Simac Ladies Tour opened with a 2.4 km prologue in Ede and a 17 km time trial in Gennepp on stage 2. The remaining stages are relatively flat and sprints are expected, while the final two stages, originally billed as selective parcours, have been changed to a circuit-style race.
Canyon-SRAM has a strong roster that includes Alice Burns, Hannah Burns, Ella Harris, and Alexis Ryan, along with Kasia Niewiadoma, who competed in the Tokyo Olympics and is always considered a GC candidate for the team.
Burns, who finished third in the uphill sprint on the first stage of the Ladies Tour of Norway last week, has recovered from a brief illness and is ready for the Simak Ladies Tour, according to a press release.
"After Norway, I had a few recovery days and am feeling better for this week's Tour. The flat sprint stages in stages 1 and 3 suit me. As a team we can aim for the podium every day and we should be able to be in the top half of the overall."
