Tom Dumoulin forced to end season early with broken wrist

Jumbo Visma announced that Tom Dumoulin will be out for the season after breaking his wrist when he was hit by a turning car while riding his normal training route to scout the Tour de Dumoulin scheduled for October.

The Tokyo Olympic silver medalist, who recently rekindled his passion for cycling after a five-month break and was working toward the UCI Road World Championships this month, is scheduled to undergo wrist surgery Friday.

"It's a huge disappointment," he said. My season is over. My season is over. Also, I felt really strong in training today. I had confidence that I could run very strong this month."

Dumoulin announced at the beginning of the year that he was taking a break from racing to think about his career and future, but returned to racing in June. 30-year-old Dumoulin returned to racing at the Tour de Suisse, working for his teammates. He then competed in national championships, winning his fourth Dutch time trial title and his first major victory since the final time trial of the 2018 Tour de France.

A major goal for the rider in his return to cycling was the Olympics, where he finished 1:01 behind time trial gold medal winner Primoš Roglic of Slovenia and three seconds ahead of Australian Rohan Dennis, who took silver. The Dutch rider said at the time that the silver medal had a "golden edge" and that he intended to continue as a professional rider.

After the Olympics, he returned to racing in the Benelux Tour to prepare for the UCI Road World Championships in Flanders this month. He finished sixth in the individual time trial on stage 2, but this was a short time trial that did not play to his strengths.

Prior to his injury, Dumoulin was scheduled to race in Italy after the World Championships, including Il Lombardia on October 9.

"I was really looking forward to it," he said. But unfortunately not this year."
