Canadian Cyclocross Championships Postponed Due to State of Emergency

The 2021 Canadian Cyclocross Championships and Bear Crossing Grand Prix, originally scheduled for November 27-28, have been postponed due to the state of emergency caused by severe flooding in British Columbia, and will now be held January 8-9, 2022, pending UCI approval.

"Recognizing the difficult situation facing many British Columbians, we felt it appropriate to postpone the event while we wait for things to normalize," said event organizer John Watkin.

"As we move forward with the logistics of the event, we will continue to keep participants and volunteers updated on next steps and registration.

The 2020 National Championships and Grand Prix were scheduled to take place in November, but were cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The cyclocross national championships were not held until 2019 in Petersboro, Ontario, and the elite title was won by Magaly Rochette and Michael Van den Ham.

Highways and railroads in the interior of the province and the Vancouver area are closed in various states due to record rainfall and flooding from rivers in the atmosphere, displacing thousands of residents.

The provincial government has declared a 14-day state of emergency and Canadian troops have been mobilized to rescue stranded residents.

Cycling Canada released a statement saying that various stakeholders believe it is safer for participants to compete at a later date once the situation is under control.

Participants currently registered for the competition will be contacted by the organizers shortly regarding registration transfer options.

Individuals wishing to help those affected by the flooding are encouraged to donate to the Red Cross British Columbia Flood and Extreme Weather Appeal (open in new tab), which provides humanitarian assistance to those in and around the affected areas.
