Details have emerged on the team relay event that will be tested at the 2022 UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
According to Wielerflits.nl, the team will consist of one elite male, one elite female, and two U23 or junior men and women. Athletes competing in this event must also participate in their respective disciplines of the World Championships.
The race will consist of six laps, with each racer completing one lap of the 3km course alone and joining the next racer at the transition zone. Each country may decide its own starting order, and the winner is determined by the final standings.
The race will be held on Friday, January 28 at 12:30 p.m. (local time) as the first of three days of racing at Centennial Park in Fayetteville. It will be the opening event for the championship, which is sponsored by retail giant Wal-Mart.
The UCI has held a similar relay at the Mountain Bike World Championships since 1999, and has since expanded it to include U23 and junior riders. U23s, and junior riders have also started to participate.
The cyclo-cross event differs from the team relay recently introduced at the UCI Road World Championships in that three men and three women compete in separate team time trials, with the lowest cumulative time winning.
Titles for juniors, elite women, and U23 men will be decided on Saturday, while the rainbow jerseys for junior men, U23 women, and elite men will be confirmed on Sunday. Last year, the junior race in Ostend, Belgium was not held due to pandemic prevention of the coronavirus.
General admission tickets are on sale now for $30 per day and $50 for a three-day pass, which includes free shuttle service and/or bike valet; VIP tickets are $175 per day and $300 for a three-day pass; children 11 and under are free and can pick up their tickets on-site. This is the second time in 72 years that the Cyclocross World Championships will be held in the U.S. The last time was in 2013 in Louisville, Kentucky.
