Quick-Step Alfa Vinyl's celebration of Yves Lampère's success in the Tour de France's opening time trial turned to fear and concern late Friday night when a new case of COVID-19 was found in a key team staff member.
Quick Step Alpha Vinyl revealed that Tom Steels had tested positive later that day, forcing Luca Bramati to fly in from Italy in the team car.
Team manager Patrick Lefevere also revealed that mechanic Renesse Versheve and food manager Carolien Rector had also recently tested positive.
Communications manager Alessandro Tegner and osteopath Steven Vranken tested positive before heading to the Tour de France, where they stayed at home.
Tim Declercq tested positive upon arrival in Denmark and was immediately sent home and replaced by French national champion Florian Sénéchal.
Quick-Step Alphavinir will be aiming for a sprint victory at the Tour de France with Fabio Jacobsen.
In short, Quick-Step Alfa Vinyl suffered seven positive cases in six days, five of them at the Tour de France Grand Depart in Denmark.
"However beautifully the Tour has started, the fear is still there; COVID is prevalent in the team and it is pure stress. I hold my heart every time the phone rings. We are getting more than our fair share now," Leferet said in his latest blog for Nieuwsblad. [Fortunately, our staff works separately from the riders. It would also put a hole in our organization. If we bring someone to the Tour, it's because he or she has added value."
