Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was hit by a car driver during a training run in Alcantarilla, southeastern Spain, Saturday morning.

Valverde was taken to Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital for 24-hour monitoring, and Movistar announced in a medical update that he had no broken bones.

"We have confirmed that Alejandro Valverde has no fractures or serious injuries after suffering an accident this Saturday when he was riding with his teammates in Alcantarilla," Movistar wrote in a medical statement.

"Valverde will be under observation for 24 hours and then discharged. His partner is also fine."

Valverde confirmed on his social media channels that while the accident was serious, his injuries were not. Luckily, it was all a scare and I am fine."

The 42-year-old Spanish rider plans to retire from professional cycling this year, riding his last Grand Tour at the Vuelta a EspaƱa in August and his last race at Il Lombardia in October.

According to a report in Ciclismoafondo, citing eyewitness accounts, Valverde, along with two training partners, was struck by a car driver who reversed into the group during a training ride.

The driver of the vehicle, a 69-year-old man, initially fled the scene and later turned himself in at the La Alberca police station and confessed to the incident. Authorities arrested him and the National Police will investigate the incident.
