Valverde discharged from hospital after Saturday hit-and-run

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), who was struck by a car driver while driving in southeastern Spain on Saturday morning, has already been released from the hospital and could return to training this week.

Movistar said that Valverde has no broken bones or serious injuries and is under observation at the 24-hour Virgen de la Arixaca Hospital. The 42-year-old Valverde also commented on Instagram, "Luckily, everything is terrifying and I am fine."

The Marca newspaper reported on Sunday that Valverde fell to the ground "very dizzy" after the incident and his bicycle was destroyed, but is now recovering at home. The paper added that Valverde would return to training in a few days.

The driver of the vehicle, a 69-year-old man, initially fled the scene but later turned himself in at the police station, where authorities arrested him. Valverde's manager, Antonio Sanchez, told Marca that the driver was identified thanks to another driver's attention to the license plate.

According to the report, witnesses saw the driver pass at a high rate of speed without the required one and a half meter distance from the car and then stop briefly in response to admonitions from a group of Valverde's cyclists. The car then backed up and hit the cyclists.

Valverde plans to retire as a professional cyclist this year, but he rode strong in his farewell campaign. He finished second in Strade Bianche and La Flèche Wallonne and qualified for the Giro d'Italia. After supporting the team in its pursuit of UCI ranking points to avoid relegation from the World Tour, he finished fourth overall at the Route Occitanie.

Valverde's last Grand Tour will be the Vuelta a España, which begins on August 19. Valverde won the overall title in 2009 and has 12 stage wins in 15 appearances. His last race as a professional is expected to be Il Lombardia on October 8.
