Egan Bernal nears return at high altitude camp in Andorra

Egan Bernal will begin the next step in his rehabilitation on Tuesday, starting a high-altitude training camp in Andorra. He will train in the Pyrenees until July 25.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (opens in new tab) reported Monday that Bernal is eyeing the possibility of competing in the Vuelta a Burgos (August 2-6), Ineos Grenadier's spokesman told Cycling News, that no date has yet been set for the Colombian's return to competition.

Bernal was seriously injured in a horrific training crash near Bogota on January 24 and spent nearly two weeks in intensive care.

The 2019 Tour de France winner suffered a fractured vertebra, a fractured right femur, a fractured right patella, chest trauma, a punctured lung, and several broken ribs, but returned to cycling within two months of the accident.

Dr. Gustavo Uriza, who oversaw the treatment of Bernal's injuries, told a medical conference in Colombia in April that he believed Bernal could return to training and competition quickly.

This statement led to speculation that Bernal could wear a race number as early as May, but Ineos Grenadier quickly dismissed that possibility. Team deputy manager Rod Ellingworth told Cyclingnews at the time, "We're not going to put a race bib on the team. and deputy team manager Rod Ellingworth told Cyclingnews at the time."

Bernal has been based in Europe since early May to continue his rehabilitation and work with the Ineos team. Attending an event in Cuneo later that month, Bernal revealed that in addition to physical therapy and training in the gym, he has been cycling two hours a day.

Bernal's three-week stay in Andorra, where he will train with Carlos Rodriguez, Pavel Sivakov, Lawrence de Plus, and Ethan Hayter, highlights his progress.
