Tadei Pogachar was spotted wearing a pair of currently unreleased Scicon sunglasses during a road stage at this year's Tour de France. Pogachar, the defending champion and the leading contender for this year's yellow jersey, has been sponsored by the Italian company Scicon during his last two title wins.
No information on the new glasses is yet available, but a review of the images shows what appears to be an upper frame extending down between the eyes to support the nosepiece. The integrated lenses that have been released so far are generously sized, gold-tinted, reflective, matte around the perimeter, possibly lightly textured, and opaque.
Each side of the lens steps up to a triangular outer panel vented by six parallel slots, with three long notches at the top of the lens. The slots above each eye extend higher than the frame (visible from there) and appear to function as vents that direct air upward and into the helmet, while the central slot is a positioning point for the lens, from which the frame appears to protrude. The lenses are also attached by connected nosepiece clips with each arm and a conventional gripped bridge behind it.
The frame bears the words "Scicon Performance Lab" and the lenses "Prototype," but so far there is no word on the name or release schedule for these new glasses.
This is not the first time Pogachar has been spotted wearing the rare, unreleased Scicon sunglasses at the Tour de France. Last year, he also wore a pair of wildly different sunglasses with a distinctive curve that extends outward beyond the nosepiece. The sunglasses were later identified as Aero Wing Ramon (opens in new tab).
This new pair seems to adopt a more subtle design approach than those, and thankfully also does away with the monogrammed Scicon logo across the entire lens, as seen on the Aeroshade Kunken released earlier this year.
We contacted Scicon for information on this new pair.
