Not content with spending the first four days of the first week of the Tour de France in yellow, Wout Van Aert took a stage win on stage 8 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The finish line was 5 km above Lausanne on Lake Geneva.
For Van Aert, it was a great opportunity to add more points, especially on a day when no pure sprinters could compete. The 11 points he earned in the intermediate sprint at 47km into the stage were then added to his 50 points in Lausanne. His rival, Fabio Jacobsen (Quick-Step Alfa Vinyl), only managed 9 points at the intermediate and 1 point at the finish, for a total of 61 points.
"Longwy [stage 6] was a good chance, but it turned out a little different," said Jacobsen. Today was a big chance for us to pull away from our rivals." So I'm really happy that the team did everything they could to chase down the breakaway. So I'm really happy that the team did everything they could to chase down the breakaway.
The Belgian, who now has 264 points to Jacobsen's 149 and is certainly eyeing Peter Sagan's 2018 record total of 447, thanked his countryman and teammate Nathan Van Hooydonk for his work on stage 8. The 26-year-old pulled the front of the peloton for kilometer after kilometer in an effort to chase down a three-man breakaway group.
"I want to say thank you to him tonight and hand him a glass of champagne. But I have a big gift in mind for all my teammates and a double gift for Nathan."
"One of the bike exchanges got tired, another got tired, a third came in, and still Nathan was in front. I think he's 100% confirmed for the Tour de France.
Van Aert said he had a chance to win a stage on every day of the stages following the long trip from Denmark to France, except for Friday's summit finish at La Super Planche des Belle Filles. two wins in five stages is not bad.
"Two wins in five stages, that's a crazy number in the Tour de France. 'Yes, I had in mind today to get a lot of points in the points standings and I think we have a good margin now. From now on, I want to take some points here and there and observe my rivals. That's kind of the plan."
Van Aert not only increased his points haul for the green jersey with these victories, but also brought a "good vibe" to Jumbo Visma. After all, more success can only be a plus.
"I think I'm bringing a good vibe to the team. Maybe it would be better to ask my teammates, but I think the guys on all the teams, especially our team, like to race for the win, they like to plan, they like to race, and they give their all to give 100%."
"I have competed in the TDF four times now and have always managed to win a stage. I intend to do the same this time."
