The second mountainous stage of the 2022 Tour de France took place on Sunday, with little movement at the top of the GC standings at the appetizer finish on the summit of Chatel near the Swiss border.
A breakaway group, a rarity in this year's Tour, won the stage, and the yellow contenders were again led by race leader Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) and his closest rival, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma).
Behind them, the eight men (six of whom were in the top 10 overall) rolled in three seconds behind the top two, with Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates of Ineos Grenadiers in the lead.
Race debutant and "free atom" Tom Pidcock finished another 4 seconds behind, and co-leader Dani Martinez also lost 16 minutes, but as the race heads into the Alps, the two Brits are sure to be the GC options for Ineos Looks like.
"I think we're in a pretty good position," deputy team principal Rod Ellingworth told Cycling News after the finish. 'I think these three young men will be pretty happy.'
The UAE Team Emirates again took control of the race after Rigoberto UrĂ¡n, in 16th place, broke into the breakaway group. Although the Colombian and much of the rest of the breakaway group were pulled back, the race was contested by the survivors of the breakaway group.
"I didn't expect them to go for the stage win, but with Rigo and those guys [in the breakaway], I knew they were going to have to ride hard.
"So even if they gave up the jersey, they wouldn't give it up by a wide margin. We knew they were going to run hard all day, and we knew they were going to have to run hard.
Thomas said the UAE team, with Rafau Maika and Brandon McNulty and the new winter contingent of Marc Soler and George Bennett, was not as strong as one might expect.
"But they are not as strong as expected. But they are not as strong as they are expected to be." "They got as many good riders as they did in the winter.
"Yet they have the yellow jersey in their team, and they have riders like Pogachar.
Vingegaard is 39 seconds behind Pogachar and Primosz Roglic is 2:52 behind in 13th place. (Thomas is 1 minute 17 seconds behind in third, and Yates is another 8 seconds behind.)
Thomas said that his team and the Dutch team are not the only ones who will be taking the fight to two-time champion Pogachar, but he also said that he has no intention of making contact with the team that is also Ineos's rival for the top spot in Paris. He also stated that he would not.
"It's not just us. Jumbo will also want to try something. Just like today, [the UAE] will have to run hard because Rigo is up ahead. So it's not just us trying to do something hard."
"But I think if the situation is in our favor, we will definitely take advantage.
"It's one of those things. If it's a tough stage and we and a couple of them can come out on top, of course it's to our mutual advantage, but at the same time, I'm not going to call Logrich and ask him what he's doing.
