The general manager of the Giro Donne admitted that the date of the event may be changed in the future to avoid it being too close to the Tour de France Femme or overlapping with the men's Tour de France in July.
At the conclusion of the 33rd Giro Donne on Sunday, Roberto Ruini said that the event, which has been held for 10 days over the years, needed to be "protected."
"I'm not sure if we can position the Giro Donne in a way that can strengthen it. There are two dates I share. The proximity of the two great Tour [women's competitions], France and Italy, and the fact that it coincides with the men's Tour de France," Luini said. [Obviously I will try to do my part, but the final decision will be made by others than me. But the Giro Donne is an event that really needs to be defended, and we showed that and the athletes proved it."
The Giro Donne is a "great event,"
and "the Giro Donne is a great event.
The Giro d'Italia Donne and the newly revived Tour de France Femme will be held back-to-back this July with 13 days open. Presumably to coincide with the RCS-sponsored men's Giro d'Italia in May, and to parallel the Tour de France Femme with the men's Tour de France in July.
PMG Sport and Starlight told Cycling News this spring that they were discussing a schedule change with the UCI to find the best dates on the women's calendar for the Giro Donne, although aligning it with the men's Giro was not a priority.
Ruini confirmed that the organization's intention is for the 2023 Giro Donne to begin in Rome. Currently, next year's UCI Women's World Tour calendar has the Giro Donne from June 30 to July 9.
However, organizers have indicated that they will review the dates so that they do not overlap with the men's Tour de France.
UCI President David Lapartient, who visited the Tour de France Grande Parle in Denmark, admitted in an interview with the press, including Cycling News, that the sport's governing body is working with the Giro d'Italia's Donne to find a more visible calendar date. He admitted that they are looking for.
"We are also working with Giro d'Italia Donne to think about different dates for 2023. The Giro d'Italia Donne is a great race as well.
"So we are looking at different options for 2023 first, but probably a long-term strategy, to avoid overlap in the women's calendar and to avoid major conflicts like this one [with the Tour de France] The Giro Donne in July will probably not happen in the future. It will not take place in the future."
PMG Sports and Starlight took over as organizers of the Giro Donne last year and have turned the race around, starting with better organization and marketing and improving live broadcasts this year.
This year's live broadcast is a welcome step up for the race and, coupled with the possibility of a schedule change, will bring more visibility to the Giro Donne in the coming years.
