After failing to break Tadej Pogachar's lead for five days at the 2022 Tour de France, Jumbo Visma managed to break the two-time Tour champion on the first high-altitude mountain stage to the Col de Granon.
For the first time, any team managed to break the dominance of the young Slovenian, who stole a dramatic victory from Primoš Roglic at the 2020 Tour.
With 5km to go, Jonas Vingegaard accelerated on a powerful 11.3km climb, opening a gap of one bike length, then two, then one more, and it became clear that Pogachar had no response.
Unable to keep up with teammate Rafal Mayka, Pogachar was unable to deploy his Tour on the steep uphill gradient and dropped out of the GC riders one by one.
He finished seventh, 2:51 behind the day's winner and new race leader Vingegaard. He dropped to third overall, but vowed to keep fighting.
"It's not over yet. I lost three minutes today, but tomorrow I might gain three minutes. I will keep fighting until the end. It was a tough day. It wasn't my best day. Tomorrow will be a better race. [I'm going to give it my all until the end and have no regrets."
The signs that Jumbo Visma was up to something began at the 0km mark when Van Aert and Christophe Laporte attacked and created a breakaway. Then, at the Col du Telegraph, Thiesj Benoot surged up with the Vingee goal, forcing Pogachar to respond.
On the descent, Roglic made his move and cleared with Geraint Thomas. The Jumbo-Visma duo then attacked Pogachar on the lower slope of the Galibier Pass. Each time, Pogachar had to expend energy to mark the move.
Further up the Col du Galibier, Jumbo had the numerical advantage, but Pogachar took it upon himself to drop everyone but Vingegaard. After the first regrouping on the descent, Van Aert was recalled from the break to reclaim the fallen Roglic group, and Jumbo-Visma added five riders to the GC group.
The team looked poised to attack the race leader, but as the climb kicked up, Vingegaard's teammates jumped back one by one, and it looked as if their plan would fall apart. But when Vingegaard took a moment to attack, Pogachar was unable to respond.
Thomas could not keep up with Vingegaard, nor could he follow when Gordou and Yates climbed back up and passed him. With Vingegaard taking the stage win, he finished the climb in damage limitation mode and dropped to third overall, 2:22 behind Romain Bardet (DSM).
"I was still feeling really good in Galibier. There were a lot of attacks by Jumbo, and today was really good," Pogachar said.
"On the last climb, I didn't have a good run on the last day."They fought really smart. For us, it's really hard to control who gets into the breakaway."
UAE Team Emirates lost George Bennett and Vegard Stake Rengen in COVID-19.
"We tried, but in the end Van Aert and Laporte played tactically up front. That was it."
