The AG2R Citroën team and BMC announced this morning that Bob Jungels will ride stage 12 of the Tour de France on a new, very expensive road bike. Known as the [BMC Teammachine SLR Mpc], the bike is part of the Swiss brand's "Masterpiece" collection.
The frameset alone (including fork, cockpit, and seatpost) costs €12,000, €7,300 more than an off-the-shelf version of the same frame.
The frame in question is based on the blueprints for BMC's lightweight Teammachine SLR semi-aero road bike, which Jungels used to complete a 50km solo breakaway on stage 9. BMC officials told Cycling News that the offering of the masterpiece bike commemorates that victory.
In addition to the €12,000 frameset, Jungels' mechanics will need to add a number of components to make it roadworthy. From a video of the bike with Ben O'Connor's name on it, released on the team's Instagram prior to the stage, it appears to be equipped with Campagnolo Bora Ultra WTO 45 wheels, Pirelli P Zero race tires, and Campagnolo Super Record EPS groupset . Finishing components such as saddles, bar tape, bottle cages, and pedals should also be considered.
The total value of these components would make the Jungels' bike worth around €21,000.
If you are wondering how it compares to other Tour de France bikes, please see our feature that delves into the cost of Tour de France bikes. However, AG2R Citroën, which is sponsored by a variety of brands, will not have to pay full price for this bike.
Regarding the Masterpiece program, BMC states that "perfection is the only goal, and each module is brought to life by the world's leading carbon fiber craftsmen," and goes on to say that "stiffness, weight, and performance figures all exceed those of the most demanding professional riders."
This program is "a true testament to the quality of the product.
The program officially began in 2020 when the brand announced a €10,000 frame based on its road machine, but Teammachine did not get the treatment until June 2022.
