COVID-19 Positives Continue for UAE Team Emirates in Pogacar at Tour de France

UAE Team Emirates manager Joxen Fernandez Mazin is the latest member of the support team for Tadej Pogachar, who is leaving the Tour de France after testing positive for COVID-19.

Pogachar had already lost teammates George Bennett and Vegard Stake Rengen to positive COVID-19 tests early in the race. Rafal Majka also tested positive for coronavirus, but because his viral load was low, he was deemed uninfected and allowed to remain in the race.

Majka was the last support rider for Pogachar in the Col de Granon on stage 11, but his efforts did not prevent the Slovenian from losing the yellow jersey and he fell to third overall, 2:22 behind new leader Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma)

Wednesday's race.

In the aftermath of Wednesday's stage, Matsin tested positive for COVID-19 in an internal test conducted by the team. The Spaniard announced the news and his withdrawal from the Tour via social media on Thursday.

"Now I have to say goodbye to my main goal for the year. Last night, I tested positive for COVID-19 in an internal team test." He wrote, "I still have a lot of tools left." He added.

Pogachar has five teammates in this Tour - Marc Soler, Brandon McNulty, Mikkel Bjarg, Marc Hirschi, and Micah - but he was also in the Vingeegor's Galibier and Col du Granon on stage 11. They were far outpaced by the Jumbo-Visma team.
