Warren Barguil (Arkea-Samsic) became the latest rider to leave the Tour de France due to COVID-19, testing positive Friday morning before stage 13.
The Frenchman, who won the polka-dot jersey in 2017, came close to winning stage 11 from a breakaway group on Wednesday but faded away as the yellow jersey battle sparked on the slopes above the Col de Granon.
Barguil finished 10th in this stage, but slumped to 103rd in the Alps on stage 12.
He tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday morning and was pulled from the race by his team.
"Warren Barguil will not race this morning's 13th stage of the Tour de France due to a positive test for COVID-19. All other seven riders were negative," a statement from the team said. Thank you, Wawa."
Arkea-Samsic dropped to sixth overall in the Alpe d'Huez, despite Nairo Quintana's second place in the Col de Granon.
Barguil followed Luke Durbridge (Bike Exchange-Jayco), Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroen), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), and the UAE Team Emirates duo of George Bennett and Vegard Stake Rengen, COVID-19 made him the sixth rider to abandon the Tour de France. A number of other riders tested positive in the days leading up to the Tour and had to be replaced by reserve riders.
There have been more cases among the team staff, with Quick-Step Alphavinir losing several members for the start of the Tour, and even the director and Netflix crew leaving other teams. On Thursday, Tadei Pogachar's UAE Team Emirates manager, Joxen Matshin, tested positive and left the race.
So far, all cases have been confirmed by internal testing. The official UCI-regulated test conducted by race organizer ASO on Monday's rest day did not show a positive test. The next official inspection will take place on the final rest day this Monday, but due to stage 15, there is a possibility that another inspection will take place on Sunday evening. [Bob Jungels (AG2R Kutiloen) and Rafal Mayka (UAE Team Emirates) were determined to have low viral levels and are not infected.
