Caleb Yuan's bad luck seems to have carried over from the Giro d'Italia to the Tour de France. Lotto Soudal has not confirmed the extent of Yuan's injuries, but he has a knee and shoulder injury.
Ewan was the leading rider of the stage, but he fell unexpectedly after appearing to collide with Lotto Soudal's teammate, who was leading the peloton, at a right-hand corner with just over 70km to go in an attempt to keep the day's breakaway group at a manageable distance.
"Everyone was doing a really good job. The breakaway group didn't get that far ahead. At the corner, they just kind of slammed into me in the middle of the corner. That left me with nowhere to go and I crashed into the back of the guys in front of me," Ewan said of his crash after crossing the finish line 20:05 behind stage winner Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo).
The race medic, sitting on the side of the road, briefly diagnosed Ewan's injuries, which appeared to be abrasions on his right arm, knee, and leg. He got back on his bike and chased to get back into the race, but was unable to get help from his teammates at Lotto Soudal.
Initially, he ran in the slipstream of the team car, desperately trying to get back into the field. As the Alpecin-Desseuninck riders paced the front of the pack, race officials asked Ewan to get an assist from the team car with 65.5 km to go.
He eventually arrived at the tail of the caravan and attempted to pass through the team cars, but was still 45 seconds behind the tail.
Ewan eventually caught up with a small group, and the race was on to the day's key climb, the Côte de Saint-Romain-en-Gard, the third category.
But when the road turned uphill, it spelled the end for Ewan. With 50km to go, Ewan dropped out of the chase group and, wincing in pain, set out for the finish line.
"Once it gets pretty warm, everything feels okay, but once it cools down a little more, I think I'll start to feel it. My collarbone is fine, I broke it last year," Ewan said.
"Yeah, I think I went down once and wasn't in good shape anymore. Once I got up, I did a big chase to get back. Yeah, there really wasn't anything left."
In May, Ewan ended the 2022 Giro d'Italia without a win, leaving before stage 12, described as "the Giro from hell," but soon turned his attention to the Tour de France.
Ewan won five stages in the Tour de France in 2019 and 2020, but his best finishes this year were 13th on stage 2 and 9th on stage 3 in Grande Paire, Denmark.
He weathered a difficult alpine stage in the hopes of securing a sprint victory in the Tour de France, where he said sprinters have little chance.
"There are only two sprint wins in stage 13," he said.
"Today I thought I had a chance and I tried to seize it. But all I can say is that it was bad luck. I don't think anything is broken, but I won't really know until I cool down and probably the next morning to see what's wrong. I think I'm okay now.
