Filippo Ganna has postponed his UCI Hour Record attempt scheduled for late August in Grenchen; according to an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, his attempt will be postponed until after the UCI Road World Championships, or possibly until 2023.
"I'm already on the road," he said.
"It has already been postponed and will not take place in August," Ganna told La Gazzetta. I wanted to think only about the Tour de France. After the Tour, I will more or less decide when I will go to the Tour. I think after the World Championships."
Ganna will defend his time trial title at the road world championships in Wollongong in September before competing in the track world championships at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines stadium, the venue for the track events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. If he does not challenge the hour record in the early fall, his challenge will be postponed until 2023.
"As I always say, it's not a priority for me," Ganna said. A lot of people have asked me to do it, but it's not something I've initiated. In any case, I'll wait a little longer."
Ganna was scheduled to attempt the Hour Record in Grenchen on August 23 or 24. The record is currently held by Victor Kampenaerts, who marked 55.089 km in Aguascalientes in April 2019. The Belgian suggested last winter that Ganna could surpass 57km if he were to challenge the record. The most recent high-profile athlete to challenge Campenaerts' record is Alex Dowsett, who marked 54.555 km last November.
Ganna is currently competing in his debut Tour de France. He was favored to win the opening time trial in Copenhagen, but a puncture cost him fourth place.
Ganna's main role is to support Geraint Thomas, who is currently third overall, but he was free to join the break in stage 13 on Friday.
"It's not easy to go into a break like this in the Tour, and he paid the price in the finale, but Pedersen was in great form. I don't think I could have kept up with him anyway. It was a bit of a struggle because of the heat."
