Positive tests for COVID-19 continued in the Tour de France peloton, with stage winners Magnus Kort (EF Education - Easy Post) and Simon Clark (Israel - Premier Tech) testing positive before stage 15. Both left the race.
"Magnus Kort woke up this morning with a headache and fever and then tested positive for COVID-19. He will not start stage 15 of the Tour de France. His medical checks are ongoing," EF Education - Easy Post announced when the team arrived in Rodez for the stage start.
Colt delighted the large Danish crowd early in the 2022 Tour de France by attacking in the polka-dot jersey on stages 2 and 3. He then won stage 10 in Megève.
Clark won the fifth stage over the Paris-Roubaix cobblestones to Wallers. According to Israel Premier Tech, he tested positive for COVID-19 on a routine test, while all others tested negative.
"Unfortunately, Simon Clark tested positive for COVID after routine testing by the team. As such, Simon will miss the start of stage 15. All other riders tested negative and will be able to race today," Israel Premier Tech announced.
In accordance with the UCI COVID-19 protocol, all riders, staff and race officials will undergo rapid antigen testing on Sunday evening or on a rest day in Carcassonne.
Under the recently revised protocol, athletes may continue with the Tour de France if PCR testing shows low viral levels, as in the case of Bob Jungels and Rafa Mayka.
Eight riders tested positive for COVID-19 at this year's Tour de France.
Warren Barguil will be joined by Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange-Jayco), Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroen), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), and the UAE team of George Bennett and Vegard Stake Rengen. They became the sixth rider to abandon the Tour de France before stage 13 due to COVID-19, following the Emirates Duo.
A number of other riders tested positive in the days leading up to the Tour and had to be replaced by reserve riders.
