Tour de France leader Vingegaard loses Kruijswijk in crash

On the same day that Tour de France leader Jonas Vingegaard's teammate Primos Roglic abandoned the race due to a crash injury, further trouble struck the team when Steven Kruijswijk crashed on stage 15, taking him out of the race.

The Dutchman crashed with Team DSM's Martin Tusfeldt and was taken off the course with a suspected broken collarbone. Green jersey Wout van Aert was also involved in the accident and drove away knowing that Kruijswijk would not be able to continue the race.

Seven kilometers later, Vingegaard crashed with teammate Tiesj Benoot.

Vingegaard got up, switched to a new bike, and chased again with Christophe Laporte, Sepp Kuss, and Nathan Van Hooydonk, but was shaken.

The Dane leads the race by 2:22 over UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogachar, but will be without two key helpers for the upcoming stages in the Pyrenees.

Pogachar also lost two teammates early in the race. Vegard Stake Rengen and George Bennett left the race after testing positive for COVID-19. Among the top contenders, only Geraint Thomas remains with the Ineos.

The peloton was chasing two attackers, Mikel Honoré and Nils Pollitt, before the intermediate sprint, but after Vingegaard rejoined, Van Aert took the lead with 15 points.

More to come.
