As the only French team competing in the World Tour, the nation's eyes will be on FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope when the Tour de France Femme begins this Sunday. While not leading a French leader in the race, French domestique Marie Le Net is confident in the team's chances in its home race.
Le Net, 22, will join the team in a support role for leader Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig and deputy leader Marta Cavalli. She told Cycling News that the yellow jersey is a possibility for the team.
"I'm confident and I have confidence in my teammates," Le Net said. 'We're a really good group and I feel good. Cecily is the leader, but we also have Marta as a sub-leader. So we have two cards that no other team has.
"With the team we have now, the yellow jersey is possible. It's not easy, but it's possible if we work well together."
The team backing Uttrup Ludwig and Cavalli has retained sprinter Clara Copponi and has recruited strong climbers Grace Brown and Evita Mujic and all-rounders Le Net and Vittoria Guazzini, who are fully committed.
With eight chances to win a stage and the possibility of a successful breakaway, Le Nette says the FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope game plan will revolve around the yellow jersey and the final uphill stage.
"It's possible that I will be asked to enter the breakaway, and if the peloton doesn't chase the breakaway, then I might get my chance. But I'm not there for my chances, I'm there to focus on the best GC outcome."
"The hills are where I can create gaps. We have two of the best climbers here, Cecilie and Marta.
Le Net may not be thinking of his own victory, but there is hope among French riders that someone else might win their home Grand Tour.
"I think it's possible, but of course it would be better if it was a French rider from FDJ," Le Nette said of the possibility of a Frenchman winning a stage. But whether it's Juliette [Labouse] or Audrey [Cordon-Lago], they've had a great start to the season and they deserve to win a stage."
